What is tooth extraction?

Tooth extraction is a dental procedure to completely remove one or more teeth from the jawbone. This method is often indicated when the tooth is no longer able to recover, seriously affecting oral health or potentially spreading bacteria and infection.

Although it is the last resort in conservative dentistry, if performed properly, tooth extraction will help completely eliminate the source of the disease and prevent dangerous complications.

The effects of not extracting teeth in time

Delaying tooth extraction can lead to many serious consequences:

  • Widespread infection: Bacteria from damaged teeth can spread to the tooth root, jaw bone and blood, causing systemic infection.
  • Loss of teeth: A damaged tooth left untreated for a long time can affect adjacent teeth, causing looseness and loss of teeth in series.
  • Jaw bone loss: Missing teeth that are not replaced promptly will lead to jaw bone loss, causing facial deformity and rapid aging.
  • Prolonged pain:Inflammation, abscesses or impacted wisdom teeth will cause continuous pain, affecting the quality of life.

Solutions to replace teeth after extraction

Tooth extraction is not the end of chewing function. After the tooth socket heals, customers can choose the following restoration solutions:

  • Implantation: This is the most modern method, implanting a titanium artificial tooth root into the jawbone to replace the lost tooth root. Implants provide function and aesthetics similar to real teeth, with high durability.
  • Making a porcelain bridge: Applied when 1-3 teeth are lost, using two adjacent teeth as pillars for the porcelain bridge.
  • Removable dentures: For the elderly or those who have lost many teeth in a row, cost-effective.

What’s different about tooth extraction for children?

Children often have their baby teeth extracted when they are loose or affect the permanent teeth that grow later. However:

  • Extracting baby teeth too early can cause misaligned bites.
  • Extracting too late can easily cause permanent teeth to grow crooked.
  • The procedure needs to be gentle, safe anesthesia, combined with a fun mentality for children to cooperate.

At Lux Smile Dental, we have a team of pediatric dentists, using appropriate tools and methods to ensure that children feel safe and comfortable when coming for examination.

Tooth extraction process at Lux Smile Dental Clinic

At Lux Smile, the entire tooth extraction process is performed in an absolutely sterile environment, by a team of experienced specialists, applying modern technology to help minimize pain and recovery time:

Step 1: Examination and imaging diagnosis

  • The doctor takes an X-ray of the entire jaw or at the location of the tooth to be extracted to assess the extent of damage, shape of the tooth root, connection to the nerve, maxillary sinus…

Step 2: Local anesthesia

  • Use specialized anesthetics to eliminate pain, ensuring customer comfort throughout the process extraction.

Step 3: Proceed to tooth extraction

  • With gentle technique, the doctor uses a special prybar and forceps to separate the tooth from the bone socket. If the tooth is difficult, the tooth can be divided into small pieces for easy removal without damaging the surrounding tissue.

Step 4: Stitch the wound (if necessary)

  • In case the extraction wound is large or complicated, the doctor will stitch it with absorbable sutures or regular sutures to ensure hemostasis and promote healing.

Step 5: Instructions for post-extraction care

  • The customer will be given detailed instructions on home care, when to return for a check-up, and things to keep in mind to ensure a quick recovery.
  • Bite the gauze firmly to stop the bleeding: Keep the gauze for at least 30 minutes after extraction.
  • Do not rinse your mouth vigorously: Avoid dislodging the blood clot in the first 24 hours.
  • Cold compress – warm compress: Cold compress in the first 24 hours to reduce swelling, from the second day you can switch to warm compress.
  • Take medication as prescribed: Do not stop or change the dose of medication on your own.
  • Eat soft foods: Avoid hard, spicy, hot foods that can easily cause injury.
  • Do not smoke: Smoking can slow down healing and cause dry socket.
  • Gently clean your teeth: Do not brush the wound area, use saline if prescribed.
