What is periodontitis?

Periodontal disease is a chronic inflammatory condition that affects the supporting tissues around the teeth – including the gums, periodontal ligament and alveolar bone. This is one of the leading causes of tooth loss in adults if not treated promptly.

Periodontitis progresses silently through many stages, from mild gingivitis to severe damage, causing gum recession, bone loss, loose teeth and eventually tooth loss.

Deep cleaning (scaling)

  • Procedure: The dentist will use ultrasonic instruments (possibly accompanied by hand instruments) to scrape off plaque and smooth the tooth surface.

Endodontic treatment

  • Purpose: Treat infected pulp caused by periodontal disease.
  • Procedure: The dentist will remove infected pulp and seal the root canal.

Periodontal surgery

  • Purpose: Remove periodontal pockets, regenerate gum tissue, clean alveolar bone.
    Types of surgery:
  • Bone grafting: For cases where the alveolar bone is severely lost.
  • Gum grafting: For cases where the gums have receded.
  • Gingivectomy: Removes excess gum tissue to facilitate better oral hygiene.

Supportive treatment

  • Antibiotics: Used to kill disease-causing bacteria.
  • Anti-inflammatory drugs: Reduce gum inflammation.
  • Mouthwash: Helps clean the mouth and prevent bacteria from growing.

Notes after periodontal treatment

  • Follow the care regimen and take medication as prescribed.
  • Keep your mouth clean: brush your teeth twice a day, use dental floss.
  • Do not smoke, limit alcohol and sweets.
  • Re-examine every 3–6 months to monitor progress.
